Énergie potentielle d'une atmosphère en équilibre dans le champ de la pesanteur

Abstract
If, at a certain altitude a mass of air is compressed and is then moved down to a lower level, we take in energy. On the other hand, warming again this air to the ambient temperature and then expanding it, we get also energy. It is shown that the energy balance is positive unless the atmosphere is in isothermal equilibrium, in which case this balance is null.

Résumé
Si, à une certaine altitude, on comprime une masse d'air et qu'on la transporte à un niveau plus bas, on recueille de l'énergie. D'autre part en réchauffant cet air jusqu'à la température ambiante puis en provoquant sa détente on recueille à nouveau de l'énergie. Il est montré que le bilan énergétique global est positif à moins que l'atmosphère ne soit en équilibre isotherme, auquel cas ce bilan est nul.
